Tesla charging time: what is the average and how can it be minimized?

Oct 24, 2024

What is the average Tesla charging time?

The average Tesla charging time greatly depends on the charging method used and the specific Tesla model. Charging a Model S with a 100 kWh battery from a connector can take up to 43 hours for a full charge. With home wall chargers, which we have discussed multiple times on our blog, the charging time can be reduced to an average of 3-6 hours. This depends on how much the car's battery has drained and its capacity.

Home smart chargers provide a particularly convenient solution, as we can easily charge our car at night or even during work hours. We can also monitor and optimize the charging process remotely through an app. In the case of Teslas, there is also the possibility of so-called "Supercharger" charging. However, this requires a special fast charger, which is typically found at charging stations along highways and in urban areas.

How long does it take to charge a Tesla Model 3?

The Tesla Model 3 is one of the most sought-after electric cars in the world, mainly due to the range of its battery. The charging time, however, can vary depending on several factors. For a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus equipped with a 57.5 kWh battery, it takes about 48 hours to charge the battery.

If we charge the car from a 230 V socket (emergency charger), a full charge takes about 16 hours.

The most efficient solution at home, using an 11 kW AC wall charger, can fully charge the car's battery from 0% to 100% in about 5 hours.

How to minimize charging time?

As we have mentioned, the charging time for a Tesla can depend on several factors. On one hand, it depends on the type of car, as a Tesla Model S and a Model 3 can differ significantly. But the speed is also influenced by factors such as the state of the battery, its temperature, and the performance of the charger. It can be very helpful if we regularly check our battery, keep it warm whenever possible, for example in a garage, and pay attention to the condition and cleanliness of the charging connectors.

However, the most effective solution at home is to use a modern wall charger. Having your own charging station not only makes the charging process more convenient but also faster. One reason is that it provides significantly better speed compared to average plug charging. The other is that we no longer have to rely on public charging stations, as we can charge our car's battery from our own electrical network.
