AC or DC? It matters!
Let's start with the basics: electric cars can be charged with two types of current. In households, we typically use alternating current, or AC, which are the "friendlier" home charging solutions. This includes wall chargers and the emergency chargers that come with the car. DC, or direct current, is generally associated with high-performance fast chargers, which we encounter mainly at public charging stations.
In AC charging, the alternating current (AC) coming from the grid is converted into direct current (DC) by the car itself with the help of an internal charging controller and rectifier. This device is called an on-board charger. A common misconception is to refer to it as an inverter, but the inverter actually works in the opposite direction: it converts direct current into alternating current – for example, in solar panel systems or to operate the electric car’s motor if it is an AC motor.
In terms of charging, we are therefore talking about a rectifier, not an inverter, which converts AC to DC so that the battery can be charged.
On the other hand, DC chargers already provide direct current to the car. Therefore, they are equipped with everything needed for the conversion: rectifier, charging controller, cooling, etc. These are faster but are typically more expensive and would not be worth operating at home. Meanwhile, an AC wall charger falls into the affordable category.
What about emergency chargers?
Most electric cars come factory-equipped with a charger that plugs into a standard electrical outlet, i.e., an emergency charger. This can also charge the car, but very slowly. It's good as a backup or if you want to charge temporarily at a weekend house. However, it is not a practical solution for longer distances.
