Summer travel by electric car: planning, charging, comfort at every level

Jul 24, 2025

Traveling in an electric car during the summer requires some planning. It is no longer enough to simply input the destination into the GPS and set off. It's advisable to plan the route in advance so that charging stations, their types, and charging speeds are included. Some mobile applications can be great companions in this regard, as they show the availability of chargers in real-time, their accessibility, and in some cases, even the charging fees.

You can read guides about home and community charging on the Voltie blog, tips for installing smart chargers, as well as content based on real experiences with energy management perspectives. In this latest article about summer travel, we discuss how to plan your trip with an electric car.

Finding accommodation with an electric car

When planning trips in Hungary, a fundamental question arises: can the car be charged at the accommodation during the night? Fortunately, recently hosts are becoming increasingly open to introducing this service. Behind this is both a guest-centric mindset and new legal obligations.

The first step is a regulation that came into effect in 2022, which mandates the installation of electric car charging options in new or renovated buildings, while older buildings were given 3 years to catch up. As of January 1, 2025, the amendment to the 9/2023. (V. 25.) ÉKM regulation issued on May 25, 2023, came into force, stating that in all non-residential buildings with at least 20 parking spaces (and where the parking is located within the building or directly next to it), it is mandatory to install at least one electric car charging point.

This is also applicable to accommodations, so in the upcoming period, more and more hotels, guesthouses, and inns will become electric-friendly. An additional motivation may be that according to the 2022 government regulation, an extra 5 points are awarded for having an electric car charger in the accommodation classification system – this can be crucial in retaining or increasing the number of stars. The certification is mandatory for all accommodations every few years.

Summer travel with an electric car: an advantage if accommodations are prepared

Guests using electric cars are now consciously looking for hotels, guesthouses, and inns where charging options are available. Booking and Airbnb already offer filters for this. Those who provide chargers appear in searches sooner and have a better chance of receiving bookings. Moreover, charging provides comfort to guests and revenue to the host since the owner can set a fee for charging based on per-minute use, consumption, or a fixed amount.

Woodparadise: where a charger awaits

A great example of this is one of our partners located just a few kilometers from Zalakaros, in a hidden, quiet vineyard Woodparadise. They have also committed to the Voltie charger. The premium designed apartments, along with the natural environment and sustainable approach, create a complete unity.

Voltie offers flexible solutions for accommodations: the performance and operation of the chargers can be customized, and with the application, consumption can be monitored and pricing can be set. By installing such a system, accommodations can truly adapt to the guests' lifestyle – whether it’s a rural guesthouse or an urban hotel.

Planning a summer trip with an electric car is now easy if you prepare for it consciously. Charge your battery, find accommodation where both you and your car can recharge. For those managing accommodations who want to make their offer more attractive, now is the time: check out our website and learn about the opportunities with Voltie!
