The question of whether electric or traditional fuel is more economical forms the basis of much debate. In our article, we will show what factors may affect the price of electric charging and how it compares to traditional solutions (e.g., gasoline)!

The costs of electric vs. traditional fuel

It is important to state in advance: the prices at gas stations and charging stations are both dependent on the station. However, what does not seem to change anytime soon is the price of electricity and gasoline. To illustrate with a specific example:

  • for a 10-15 year old passenger car, 100 kilometers can be covered by both diesel and gasoline vehicles for amounts between 5000-6000 HUF (based on an average consumption of 8 liters),

  • while the same distance can be covered in an electric car, using home charging for 600-1200 HUF, from a fast charger for about 3000 HUF, and from a public fast charger for about 2000-2500 HUF (based on an average consumption of 17 kWh).

Charging Costs: What Influences Them?

The cost of electric charging is therefore significantly more favorable than that of gasoline or diesel fuel—however, as we have seen, their price ranges are not uniform. This is partly due to the types of chargers and partly dependent on current electricity prices and the charging speeds of the chargers.

There are three types of chargers, each with different characteristics:

  1. Fast chargers: available in large cities and on highways. The fastest and also the most expensive charging option.

  2. Public chargers: chargers located at shopping centers, public parking lots, and squares. Their advantage is that we can take advantage of discounts at these charging stations in several ways (via subscription, topping up money, or registration). However, their disadvantage is that you may not always find a working (or available) charging station when you need one.

  3. Home chargers: if you want to charge your vehicle in your yard or garage, and do so cheaply for around 1000 HUF, this solution could be ideal for you. The higher installation cost can pay off in a few months or years.
