Jan 9, 2025

Why is the meaning of kWh important if you have an electric car?

In the case of charging electric cars, kWh is an important indicator of battery capacity. The kW describes the power of charging stations or home wall chargers. When using a charging point, it's worth considering how many kW the charger operates at and how long it takes to deliver the necessary energy to the battery.

The range of electric cars is closely related to the battery capacity, which is measured in kWh. We have previously written about the difference between kW and kWh. To get an idea of what distance you can cover on a single charge, you also need to consider the car's energy consumption, which is expressed in kWh/100 km. If a car's consumption is 15 kWh/100 km, then with a 50 kWh battery, you can travel approximately 300 km.

How can we calculate?

The use of electric cars indicates not only energy consumption in kWh but also costs. Charging fees are often based on kWh, so the better you understand what this unit means, the more accurately you can calculate costs.

The relationship between charging speed and kWh

The power of charging stations specified in kW shows how quickly they can charge the battery. If you connect your car to a 100 kW fast charger with a 50 kWh capacity battery, it can theoretically provide a full charge in half an hour.

What should you pay attention to in order to maximize your car's performance?

Many external factors affect a car's energy consumption, such as average speed, the air conditioning used, or road conditions. If you want to maximize your range, it's worth paying attention to these factors.

Electric cars open up a whole new perspective. Understanding what kWh stands for is fundamental if you have an electric car, as this unit determines how far you can travel, how long it takes to charge the battery, and what costs you can expect.

It is time to slowly shift the mindset and use kWh instead of liters as a unit of measurement. As seen in the example above, it is advisable to invest in a high-quality device suitable for home charging, as its price pays off quickly.
