Solar panel integration: simple solutions for charging electric cars

Jan 15, 2025

In this article, we will examine the problems that may arise in the integration of solar panels, and we will immediately offer solutions to make the charging process safer and more efficient.

Why can the integration of solar panels cause problems during car charging?

Solar systems have come to the forefront because they provide clean and affordable energy. However, solar energy production is not always even, as weather, time of day, or erratic consumption affect the performance of the system. This fluctuation is not the most optimal for charging electric cars, especially if the system is not properly balanced. To avoid this, an energy storage system may be necessary. In the case of net metering, the grid operates as an energy storage system.

Smart solutions for surge protection

Fortunately, innovation in this area has not halted. Our Voltie charger’s solar inverter protection function can quickly handle the surge issue. It starts and regulates your electric car's charging depending on the network voltage. The charging power will be as low as possible – allowing more space in the car's battery while keeping the voltage just below the 253-volt mark.

A surge occurs when the solar system generates excess energy and cannot handle it properly. When charging an electric car, it's better to avoid this surge for the longevity of the car's onboard charger.

Our Voltie smart charger is able to adjust in real-time to the solar system's production. It optimizes the car's charging and also alerts you if it detects any issues. We have previously written about solar car charging, and next we will discuss how this works in practice.

How can smart technology be integrated into everyday life?

When integrating solar panels, it's important to think ahead during the planning of your system. It is advisable to choose a charger that is compatible with the system while also protecting solar production. Such chargers, for example, reduce power consumption when production declines and only use the generated solar energy when it is available.

To access the monitoring function, you will need an external smart meter, which can be easily purchased as an accessory for the charger. With this device, we can monitor production and consumption.

How to prevent problems?

Developments such as photovoltaic production protection or smart chargers offer solutions to the problems of overvoltage and energy wastage. If you plan carefully and choose the right tools, the experience of driving an electric car will be more environmentally friendly and safer.
