Condominium car charging: what options do you have?
Jun 2, 2025
The idea of charging electric cars in apartment buildings raises many doubts from the very beginning. How many permits are needed for this? Who pays the electricity bill? How much does it cost? And what if the neighbor does not support the idea? These are all valid questions, but in reality, the situation is not necessarily as complicated as it seems at first, as there is a process for this as well.
What happens when you move to a condominium with an electric car?
If you already have your own car and live in a condominium, at some point you will surely reach the conclusion that it would be more convenient to charge it at home. The vehicle charged overnight is ready to go in the morning, and there’s no need to search for charging points in the city. The idea of charging an electric car in a condominium is increasingly on people’s minds since the costs of public chargers are higher, and due to the growing demand, they are often occupied.
For newly built condominiums, the electric infrastructure must already be included in the plans, while in existing buildings it still depends on the decision of the residents' community. Nevertheless, more and more communities are open to the topic as the possibility of charging electric cars is no longer a luxury but a preparation for the future.
The installation of your own charger is important for convenience, but one cannot ignore the financial aspect either, as the home electricity tariff is much more favorable than the pricing set at public charging points.
What does this mean technically?
Implementing charging in a condominium can be done in several ways. One option, which unfortunately is not always viable, is to connect to the meter that belongs to your own apartment; in this case, the consumption is easy to account for as it appears on your own electricity bill.
It makes sense to consider this if your parking space is close to the meter. However, if it is farther away, the common meter may also be an option – in this case, though, you need the assembly’s consent and separate measurement.
There is also a third option: applying for a new meter specifically for charging. However, this involves longer administrative procedures, higher costs, and more paperwork. It is not impossible, but many prefer to use the existing network. Feel free to seek advice from our expert colleagues.
Electric Vehicle Charging for Apartment Buildings with the Voltie System
Voltie chargers can be installed in apartment buildings, underground garages, and office buildings. Fast, secure, and equipped with features that make apartment building charging easier. For example: automatic reports, measuring community consumption, chargers with displays, remote troubleshooting, and integration with smart homes is also planned.
The Voltie system adapts to other consumers (elevator, lighting); the chargers only charge as much as is available. Regular software updates occur to ensure the latest data is accessible, and importantly, every charger only starts after authentication. Therefore, it's not just a matter of when the car charges, but also who, how much, and for how much. Interested in how to get started?
Once you've made your decision, it’s worth proceeding step by step. First, consider what solution fits your situation. Do you have your own parking space? Is your meter close by? Would you use the charger alone or with others? The next step is to involve the community representative or residents' meeting, followed by professional planning and execution.
The Voltie team is here to help with that: clearly, without the maze of technical details, yet offering a comprehensive solution. We help you navigate the options, assess the site, and support you in the execution as well.
