Cannot your home's electrical network handle the charging of your electric car? Then you will need an amperage upgrade... Just like with electric ovens and electric heating systems, it is crucial to verify our home's electrical network before installing the car charger, to ensure it can handle the planned electrical load. We have compiled what costs to expect in the case of a power upgrade and what the upgrade process is.
If we install a new electricity consumer and the network without inspection, it will overload; in the best case, the circuit breaker will cut off the power, but in the worst case - if the circuit breakers do not work - a fire can arise due to heat generation. Therefore, if experts assess that an ampere increase will be necessary, we should definitely heed their advice.
The ampere increase actually means increasing the strength of the current so that more devices can be operated at the same time.
How much is that?
The price of the expansion is influenced by many factors, making it difficult to determine the costs precisely.
The bigger the amperage expansion the customer wants, the more materials and labor hours will be needed.
The pricing is different for an outdated electrical system that needs a complete renovation than for a newly installed network.
It matters in the pricing how complicated the work is, as well as how many special tools and techniques are required.
In general, the price for amperage expansion can range from tens of thousands to several hundred thousand, and it is important to request an accurate quote before anyone starts the expansion.
Since the power expansion can involve serious risks, only registered electricians who are authorized for breaking seals can perform it. When requesting a quote, it is worth ensuring that it includes material and labor costs, other expenses, guarantee, and future maintenance services as well. Because unexpected costs may arise during the expansion, it is advisable to budget 10-20% more than the quote itself.
The amper extension process
On-site survey:
An on-site survey is required to determine the appropriate performance, where not only is it checked whether the current consumption can be handled by the network, but also the planned expansions are taken into account. If necessary, the specialist will help us choose the most suitable amper extension for us.
Application form:
An application form must be submitted to the service provider in case of amper extension. This will require the last paid bill, the property identification number, the applicant's information, and a power of attorney must also be attached for the entire administration, as our contractor will submit the form. It is important that the application form accurately contains the information related to the modifications! (For example, the order, performance, and connection method changes of the phases).
Sending the Technical Economic Information:
Upon a correctly filled out application form, the service provider will send back the Technical Economic Information, which will detail what modifications need to be made at the metering location. Additionally, the charges for additional services will be indicated here.
Establishment of a standard metering point:
The contractor must establish the necessary metering point based on the Technical Economic Information (GTM), and then they must notify the service provider of the completed work.
Installation of a new meter:
After reporting the completed work, the service provider's appointed personnel will install the new meter and circuit breakers.
Final connection to the network:
If the service provider's qualified technicians are tasked with the job, electricity needs to be temporarily cut off only during the installation, as they can reconnect the network until the service provider completes the final connection.
