Home wall charger guide

Nov 18, 2024

In the case of electric cars, a home wall charger is often an essential accessory. This is because charging on the street or in a parking garage becomes much more expensive and inconvenient over time.

You can find many useful articles about electric cars and their charging on our blog, and now we’ll help you choose the ideal home option!

Factory charger vs. home wall charger

You can buy a charger for your electric car that can simply be used by plugging it into a socket to charge your car. However, this charging method generally feeds the battery of our vehicle with electricity significantly slower and less effectively. These are called emergency chargers, and by their name, they are not designed for everyday use.

Furthermore, household sockets are not prepared for such a level of continuous use, thus putting the power supply of our home at risk with their regular use. Nevertheless, many use them, as it is the simplest method of charging electric cars.

In contrast, the wall charger is capable of charging electric cars' batteries much more safely, efficiently, and quickly. Thanks to dynamic power sharing, even distribution of current occurs among the consumers. It can also be easily integrated with an existing or planned solar system. In addition, the charger has been designed with many safety features that protect your home's electrical system.

Thanks to the app, our Voltie wall charger gets continuous updates, so you don't have to worry about it being incompatible with your future electric vehicle.

AC or DC?

We can charge the electric car with alternating (AC) or direct current (DC). Most home wall chargers operate on alternating current, as installing and operating DC chargers is extremely costly and not practical at all. Since we spend several hours at home charging, it is not necessary to reach a full charge in half an hour. AC chargers operate significantly more simply: they do not convert the alternating current coming from the home network into direct current themselves. All of this is managed by the charging controller found in the electric car, simplifying the process.

There are two types of AC (alternating current) wall chargers: single-phase and three-phase. The former charges through 1 phase at 230 volts, while the latter delivers 230 volts per phase (a total of 400 V).

About the home electricity system parameters

It is particularly important to check before purchasing and installing a wall charger what type of charging your electric car is capable of, and whether your home’s power supply can handle it.

If your car is only capable of single-phase charging, it is equipped with a "Type 1" connector. Modern electric vehicles today come with a "Type 2" connector, which can accommodate single or three-phase charging.

If we are before the installation of the charger, we should have an expert assess whether there is sufficient electrical capacity available in our house. We recommend entrusting the entire process to a professional, as a poorly designed system poses significant safety risks.
